What you'll learn

Cheapest non-trivial trip

Vietnam is the lowest-cost international destination from the UAE that still offers a rich experience.

Eat where locals eat

Street food is excellent and cheap. The hotel restaurant is the trap — same dish 4x the price.

Fly internally between cities

Hanoi → Da Nang → HCMC by air saves 18+ hours vs trains. Flights are AED 90-200.

Boutique > chain hotels

Independent boutiques are cheaper AND better than equivalent Hilton/Marriott.

Why Vietnam Is the Best Budget Travel Destination from Dubai

The math is striking. A comfortable 14-day trip to Vietnam from Dubai — flights, hotels, food, transport, activities, the works — comes out to about AED 2,100 per person. That’s AED 150/day, including the AED 1,400 round-trip flight amortized across the trip.

For comparison: a similar trip to Bali costs ~AED 3,200/person (14 days), Turkey costs ~AED 3,800, Maldives starts at AED 8,500. Vietnam is the cheapest non-trivial international trip available to UAE residents.

The AED 150/Day Itemized Budget

Accommodation: AED 90/day (avg)

You can stay in 3-4 star hotels for AED 60-110/night across all major cities. Boutique hotels in old quarters tend to be cheaper than the international chain options. Above AED 200/night you get genuine luxury.

Food: AED 30/day

Three meals a day:

  • Breakfast at a banh mi cart: AED 5
  • Lunch at a local com tam place: AED 8
  • Dinner at a sit-down restaurant: AED 18 (full meal with iced coffee)

You can easily spend AED 80/day if you target hotel restaurants. You can also drop to AED 18/day if you eat exclusively at street stalls. AED 30 is the comfortable middle.

Transport: AED 15/day (avg)

Within cities: Grab (Vietnam’s Uber) costs AED 6-12 per ride. Between cities: overnight sleeper buses (AED 50-80) or domestic flights (AED 90-200 for Hanoi to Da Nang).

Activities: AED 15/day (avg)

The major activities — Ha Long Bay cruise, Hoi An night market, Cu Chi Tunnels tour — cost AED 80-180 each. Average across 14 days, this works out to about AED 15/day.

What’s NOT in the AED 150/Day Budget

  1. Spa massages. AED 60-200 per session.
  2. Tailored clothing in Hoi An. Custom suits AED 250-500, dresses AED 150-300.
  3. Western-style cafes and bars. AED 25-40 for coffee + pastry vs AED 8 at a local place.
  4. Souvenirs and gifts. Lacquerware, silk, coffee. Budget AED 200-400 for the trip total.
  5. Visa on arrival. USD 25 (~AED 92) one-time fee.

The Real 14-Day Itinerary

The classic North-to-South route works best:

Days 1-4: Hanoi + Ha Long Bay. 2 nights Hanoi (old quarter), 2-night cruise on Ha Long Bay.

Days 5-9: Hoi An + Hue. 3 nights Hoi An (perfect base), day trip to Hue and My Son ruins.

Days 10-14: Ho Chi Minh City + Mekong. Flight to HCMC. 3 nights in District 1, day trips to Cu Chi Tunnels and Mekong Delta.

Pro tips from our team

Get the Vietnam SIM at the airport

Viettel offers 30-day unlimited data SIMs for AED 25 right at arrivals. Tariff is 1/10 of UAE roaming.

Book the Hoi An tailor on day 1

Tailors need 3-4 days for custom suits with proper fittings. Visit on arrival morning, not the day before you leave.

Skip the overnight train

The Reunification Express is famous but takes 35 hours. Domestic flights are AED 130 and 2 hours.

FAQs

Common questions

Is Vietnam safe for solo female travelers?

Yes — Vietnam ranks among the safest Southeast Asian destinations. Petty theft exists in tourist areas (Hanoi old quarter, Ho Chi Minh District 1) — keep phones secure on motorbike-friendly streets. Solo female travel is common; you'll meet many others on the backpacker circuit.

Do I need to pre-book hotels?

For Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh, yes — these are big cities with sprawling options and quality varies wildly. For Hoi An and smaller stops, you can sometimes walk-in cheaper but Booking.com prices are competitive.

Is the food spicy?

Less than Thai or Indian. Vietnamese food relies more on fresh herbs and balance than chili heat. If you do want spice, ask for "cay" (CHA-yi) when ordering. Pho and banh mi are mild by default.

What about food safety?

Pho, banh mi, and com tam at busy local places are very safe — high turnover means fresh ingredients. Avoid: pre-cut fruit from street vendors, anything that's been sitting out, raw oysters. Drink bottled water; brush teeth with tap water is fine for short trips.

Can I use my UAE credit card everywhere?

In Hanoi, HCMC, and major hotels — yes. In smaller cities (Hoi An, Hue) and street food places — cash only. Withdraw 5-7 million VND ($200) at a time from ATMs. International cards work at most ATMs but with ~AED 25 transaction fee.
