Summer in the UAE lasts from late May through mid-October. During that window, anything outdoors between 10 AM and 7 PM is not really an option unless you enjoy dehydration. The obvious response is to spend the weekend at Dubai Mall, then at Mall of the Emirates, then back at Dubai Mall. After about three weekends of this, even the most dedicated mall-goers need an alternative. Here are eight indoor ideas that aren’t shopping, are mostly within 30 minutes of central Dubai or Abu Dhabi, and cost under AED 100 per person for most of them.
1. Louvre Abu Dhabi — Worth the Drive
About 80 minutes from Dubai on the Sheikh Zayed Road. AED 63 adult, free for children under 18. The architecture alone — Jean Nouvel’s famous floating dome — is worth the trip, but the collection is genuinely world-class: Leonardo da Vinci, Osman Hamdi Bey, Picasso, Matisse, plus rotating world-class temporary exhibitions. Allow at least three hours. Plan lunch at the Fouquet’s on site afterwards, which has one of the best outdoor-but-shaded views in the UAE (covered and fine in summer).
2. The Museum of the Future
Dubai’s most visually striking recent building, and inside it’s an entertainingly weird experience — part museum, part theme park, part interactive art installation. AED 149, which is high for what it is but the production values are very high. Better with older kids (8+) who can engage with the storytelling. Book online, tickets sell out on weekends.
3. The Etihad Museum
Free on Emirates National Day (December 2); AED 25 otherwise. This is the story of the UAE — founding documents, interviews with the founding fathers, the constitution signing. It’s small, well-designed, and genuinely moving. Most UAE residents have never been and should go at least once. Air conditioning is excellent.
4. Dubai Opera Behind-the-Scenes Tour
AED 100, lasts about 90 minutes, runs weekday afternoons. Even if opera isn’t your thing, the architecture and backstage tour are interesting, and the view from the rooftop terrace across the Dubai Fountain and Burj Khalifa is one of the best in the city. Pair with an evening performance if something good is running.
5. An Aquarium Combo — Dubai or Abu Dhabi
Dubai Mall Aquarium is the obvious choice (AED 120), but the newer National Aquarium Abu Dhabi on Yas Island is bigger and less crowded on weekdays (AED 120 as well). Both are indoor, cool, and work for kids of almost any age. The Abu Dhabi version pairs well with lunch on Yas Island for a full-day Abu Dhabi trip.
6. IMG Worlds of Adventure — the Big Indoor Theme Park
Entirely indoor, unlike Motiongate or LEGOLAND. AED 299 adult, AED 249 child. Expensive, but if you have kids in the 6–14 range and a whole day to spend out of the heat, it’s probably the best single-location indoor entertainment in the UAE. Food options inside are just OK; eat before you go or at Cityland Mall next door afterwards.
7. Green Planet — an Indoor Rainforest
In City Walk, Dubai. AED 135 adult, AED 105 child. Small but atmospheric — a multi-level indoor tropical rainforest with sloths, snakes, monkeys, and butterflies. Two hours maximum. Works brilliantly for young kids and as an escape from the 44°C outside. The rainforest itself is kept at around 24°C, which feels spectacular in August.
8. The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque — Don’t Forget This One
Abu Dhabi’s Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is free, open to non-Muslims between prayer times, and the interior is entirely air-conditioned. The exterior marble terraces are hot in midday, but the interior courtyards and prayer halls are comfortable, and the building itself is one of the most beautiful in the world. Allow 90 minutes. Dress code is strict (abayas provided for women who arrive uncovered). The adjacent Wahat Al Karama monument is a quick 15-minute walk away.
Bonus: An Actual Plan for a Summer Weekend
A reasonable weekend that gets you out of the house: Saturday — Louvre Abu Dhabi in the morning, lunch on Yas Island, National Aquarium in the afternoon, drive back to Dubai. Sunday — Green Planet late morning, lunch at City Walk, Museum of the Future afternoon. Total outdoor exposure: about 10 minutes walking between buildings and parking. Total cost for a family of four: around AED 1,400 for two full days of entertainment that isn’t shopping.
What About Escaping the UAE Entirely?
Sometimes the right answer is just to leave for a long weekend. Check our guide to beach destinations within 6 hours of Dubai if you’re considering a short-haul escape, or see our current summer deals for specific discounted options. Maldives is genuinely cooler in August than Dubai (though wetter), and Sri Lanka’s hill country sits comfortably at 18°C year-round.
