Agra is synonymous with the Taj Mahal — one of the Seven Wonders of the World and the ultimate monument of Mughal architecture. Built by Emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his wife Mumtaz Mahal, the white marble mausoleum is perfection in symmetry. Agra Fort (another UNESCO site) was the Mughal power seat. Fatehpur Sikri (40km away) is a perfectly preserved abandoned Mughal city. The city's Islamic heritage means halal food is the norm in many areas. A day trip from Delhi by fast train (1.5 hours) is the most common way to visit.
