About Kyoto

Japan's spiritual heart — 2,000 temples and shrines, geisha districts, bamboo groves, tea ceremonies, and 1,200 years as the imperial capital.

Kyoto was Japan's imperial capital for 1,200 years (794-1868) and was deliberately spared from WWII bombing, preserving its extraordinary heritage. The city contains 17 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, 2,000 temples, 400 shrines, traditional geisha districts (Gion), bamboo forests (Arashiyama), and the refined arts of the tea ceremony, ikebana (flower arranging), and kaiseki cuisine. Cherry blossom season (late March-early April) and autumn colours (mid-November) transform the city into living art. Kyoto is the cultural antithesis of Tokyo — slow, contemplative, and rooted in tradition. Only 15 min from Osaka by Shinkansen.
