Sheki is Azerbaijan's most historically atmospheric city. The UNESCO-listed Palace of the Sheki Khans features stunning stained-glass shebeke windows — handcrafted without nails or glue from thousands of coloured glass pieces and wood lattice. Ancient caravanserais (now boutique hotels) recall the city's Silk Road heritage. The surrounding mountains are beautiful, and Sheki's famous pakhlava (baklava) and halva are reason enough to visit. A 5-hour drive from Baku through beautiful scenery makes it a perfect 2-day excursion.
