About Nizwa
Oman's ancient capital — the iconic round fort, the Friday cattle/goat market, Jebel Akhdar's rose terraces, and a gateway to the dramatic Hajar Mountains.
Nizwa was Oman's capital in the 6th and 7th centuries and remains the cultural heartland of the interior. The 17th-century Nizwa Fort — with its massive round tower — dominates the town. The adjacent traditional souq sells Omani khanjars (daggers), silver jewellery, pottery, dates, and halwa. The famous Friday livestock market (cattle and goats) is one of the most authentic Arabian experiences. Jebel Akhdar (Green Mountain, 2,000m) rises nearby with terraced rose gardens, pomegranate orchards, and the spectacular Anantara Al Jabal Al Akhdar resort on the rim. 1.5 hours from Muscat via a new highway.
